Jennie E. Watters

Former Smithfield Street resident Jennie E. Watters, 99, of Jameson Care Center died at 8:45 p.m. May 2, 2005, in the care center.

Born Dec. 18, 1905, in New Castle, she was a daughter of the late Edwin and Amanda Nelson Johnson.

She was married to William M. Watters. He died Sept. 17, 1982.

Mrs. Watters was a retired elementary school teacher in the New Castle and Union school districts.

She received her teaching certificate from Slippery Rock University and also attended Geneva College and the University of Michigan.

Mrs. Watters organized the first girls basketball team in the Union schools.

She was a member of Eastern Star, Wimodausis, AARP, Elks, and the state and local teachers’ unions.

Mrs. Watters was an avid bridge player.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William “Mel” and Joanne Watters of Bricktown, N.J.; a son-in-law, Dr. C. Paul Chow of Taiwan; and a grandson, Todd Watters of New Castle.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Karin Chow in 1989; two brothers, Dr. Robert Johnson and Herbert Johnson; and two sisters, Ida Johnson and Hilda Johnson.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Turner-Myers Funeral Home, 208 N. Jefferson St. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
