W. Russell Rohrer - November 10, 2005

W. Russell Rohrer, 84, of 2150 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Union Township, died at 3:21 a.m. Thursday at Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle, Pa.

He was born Sept. 15, 1921 in New Castle to the late Karl T. and Caroline (Ziegler) Rohrer.

Mr. Rohrer was an engineer working at Karl T. Rohrer Contracting before becoming a structural and design engineer for the Wesex Corporation of West Middlesex, Pa., from which he retired.

He was raised in the former Harbor United Presbyterian Church and most recently belonged to the Shenango Presbyterian Church, where he has served as an elder, deacon, Bible study leader and Sunday school teacher.

He graduated from Geneva College in 1943, where he received his degree in engineering. He was a WWII veteran, having served as an officer in the Merchant Marines and graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine Academy, where he received an Engineer of Vessels License. He served in the Atlantic Theatre of War.

Mr. Rohrer also was awarded the Silver Beaver Award from the French Creek Council-Boy Scouts of America and was the scout master for 25 years of Troop No. 25 in New Castle.

He was a former Union Township Planning Board member and led the Bible Study Classes for 35 years at the Lawrence County Correctional Facility. Mr. Rohrer is survived by his wife, the former June Kain, whom he married Sept. 17, 1947; two daughters, Karla R. Snyder of Mercer, Pa., and Tricia M. Warren of New Castle; a son, Richard K. Rohrer of Hermitage, Pa.; two sisters, Vivian Menning and Margery Strohecker of New Castle; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be observed from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Turner-Myers Funeral Home, 208 N. Jefferson St. in New Castle, where there will be funeral services at 1 p.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Harold ≥Bud≤ Green of the Shenango Presbyterian Church.

Interment will follow at Castle View Memorial Gardens.
