Merle Brightshue Sr.

Merle Brightshue Sr., 92, of Friendship Street died at 5:07 p.m. June 24, 2006, in Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.

Born Sept. 24, 1913, in Oil City, he was a son of the late Charles W. and Ida I. Wile Brightshue. He married the former Jessie I. Mitcheltree on May 18, 1942. She died Oct. 23, 2004.

Mr. Brightshue retired in 1978 after 36 years as a machine setter for the former Johnson Bronze Co. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater. An avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan, he also enjoyed going to Wendy’s restaurant in Neshannock Township. He was an avid horseshoe player and was the Western Pennsylvania champion multiple times.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary E. Shoaff, and Dori L. and Rick Moyer, all of New Castle; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Merle Jr. and Maria Brightshue of New Laredo, Mexico, and Gary C. Brightshue and Darrell C. Brightshue, both of New Castle; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Merlene Marie Brightshue; and four brothers, Earl Brightshue, Otto Brightshue, Vernon Brightshue and Wayne Brightshue.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 8th at 11:00 AM in the Turner-Myers Funeral Home, 208 N. Jefferson St. and will be conducted by Rev. Matthew Bupp of the City Rescue Mission.
