William T. Bates
William Trick Bates, 87, of Fowler Street died at 12:48 a.m. Nov. 14, 2006, in his home.
Born May 19, 1919, in New Castle, he was a son of the late Cramer B. and Edna L. Trick Bates. He married the former Margaret Ann Fowler Sankey on June 14, 1974. She survives.
Mr. Bates was a retired receiving department attendant at the former Mesta Machine Co. He was a January, 1940 graduate of New Castle High School. A Marine veteran, he was a drill sergeant during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Bates was past commander and a member of the Perry S. Gaston Post 343 of the American Legion and past commander of the Lawrence County Veterans Council and the American Legion County Committee. He was Protestant.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Paul Magee of New Castle; two sons and daughters-in-law, William J. and Meriam Bates of Lawton, Okla., and Edward A. and Suzy Sankey of Ellwood City; a sister-in-law, Agnes Fowler of New Castle; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Turner-Myers Funeral Home, 208 N. Jefferson St. A service will be conducted at 4 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. The Rev. Dennis L. Bupp, chaplain at Jameson Hospital, will officiate.
Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jameson Hospice of Lawrence County.
